Changing Your Name as a New Canadian Citizen

When to Change

Many new citizens change their name after receiving citizenship. It's easier to do it around the same time. You can change first name, last name, or both.

How to Change

File with your provincial Superior Court. Bring: citizenship certificate, ID, passport, fee ($150-300 depending on province). Court approves within weeks. Get certified copy.

Timeline

During IRCC processing: Submit name change request to court separately. After citizenship: Use new name for passport and other documents. Both can happen in parallel.
