Voting System in Australia: How Elections Work

Mandatory Voting

In Australia: voting is mandatory for citizens. If you don't vote: fine ($20-50 AUD). Polling booths everywhere. Takes 30 minutes max.

Federal Elections

Lower house (House of Representatives): choose your local MP. Upper house (Senate): choose senators. Both choose government.

Voting Day

Usually Saturdays (unlike most countries). Polling booths set up in schools, community centers. Open 8am-6pm. Bring ID or prove residency.
